Have questions about what to expect while attending your first opera or ballet? Fortunately, we have some helpful tips!

When should I show up?

We suggest you arrive on IU’s campus at least 30 minutes before the show to give yourself ample time to find parking. As a courtesy to the performers, late seating is not permitted. If you do arrive late, you may relax with food and beverages in our lobby and watch the performance on our televisions until intermission.

What should I wear?

Come as you are! IU Jacobs School of Music Opera and Ballet Theater does not have a dress code. Some dress to the nines, some don’t. It’s your choice.

Where should I eat?

Bloomington boasts a wide range of dining experiences—some just a short walk from the MAC. Explore Bloomington’s restaurant selection at Visit Bloomington.

Does the MAC sell food and drinks?

Beer and wine is now available for purchase in the MAC lobby prior to IU Opera and Ballet Theater performances and during intermission! You can also enjoy a variety of snacks and beverages. Plus, we sell your local favorite at all productions—ice cream from The Chocolate Moose.

What are Pre-Performance Talks?

Get behind-the-scenes production insights and fascinating background information presented by graduate students in our Musicology Department. Are the performances in English?

Languages can vary from show to show. However, English translations are projected above the stage for all operas.
